“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” ― H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Over six million people volunteer Australia wide – women, men, workers, retirees, single, partnered, parents, people living with disability, and individuals across diverse age ranges and cultural backgrounds. We can measure the rewards of volunteering in financial terms (over $25 billion to the Australian economy!)1 but the best rewards are not measured by numbers, but by hearing from volunteers themselves.
Volunteering is rewarding to me because it adds meaning to my life. I love being able to make someone else's day and nothing is more meaningful than bonding with someone and seeing their face light up when you walk in the door. Kimberley, Social and Community Support volunteer, Lighthouse Disability
[Volunteering] keeps the brain ticking over and makes me feel worthwhile. Jackie, Administrative Support volunteer, Lighthouse Disability
I get great satisfaction from doing jobs and knowing that I’ve helped clients and put a smile on a face. Charlie, Gardening and Maintenance volunteer team leader, Lighthouse Disability
Volunteers at Lighthouse Disability make significant contributions to the lives of people with a disability while being rewarded in a multitude of ways, including work experience and the development of new job skills, the opportunity to use existing skills to help the community, feeling good about making a difference, the opportunity to create meaningful friendships, and discovering all of the wonderful ways people living with disability can have a positive impact on our lives.
In the words of our volunteer, Charlie, “I would recommend volunteering to anyone with time on their hands. You get to meet new people, choose your own hours, enjoy high job satisfaction and it’s a great way to spend your spare time giving something back to the community.”
As the Volunteer Support Officer at Lighthouse Disability is it my pleasure to be involved in the recruitment and support of volunteers and I have learnt so much through the diversity, knowledge and compassion of our volunteer team.
