National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
The NDIS provides a new way of funding people who experience a disability. It is based on allocating funds to the person with the disability (following an assessment of needs and goals) so that s/he can choose the service provider that best meets the identified needs. Put another way, the person with the disability can choose the service and control how the funds are spent.
This is a big and welcome change to how disability services have been provided in the past. The NDIS is very new which means that the system is continuing to evolve. There is some uncertainty about many aspects of the program because of its ‘newness’, and that means that sometimes there are questions that are hard to answer.
Organisations that are currently providing disability services are facing huge change. We are in the process of understanding what we need to do differently to be competitive and maintain our high quality standards in the new environment.
There will be lots more about NDIS in coming weeks and months.
